5 Ways to Prevent Overeating When You’re Working From Home

With most of the population working from home at the moment, we’re all getting used to our “new normal” for the time being. And part of the new normal is eating all of our meals at home. I know many people, myself included, have concerns about this, since our routines are completely changing. Having access to your pantry all day long can be intimidating and lead to concerns about overeating. If this is something you struggle with, keep reading for 5 ways to prevent overeating while you’re working from home.

1. Don’t Keep Junk Food Around

This is probably the most important thing you can do to prevent overeating when you’re hunkering down at home. We all have certain foods that aren’t necessarily good for us but that we crave constantly. If you don’t keep these foods around the house, then you’re completely unable to access them. It’s much easier to say no to them when you shop than when you’re bored at home. So plan ahead when you go grocery shopping rather than just grabbing the usual stuff once you get there. Purchase healthier substitutes or things that won’t tempt you as much.

2. Focus on Whole Foods

When you’re grocery shopping, focus more on whole foods rather than processed foods. This means whole fruits, whole vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains, etc. Whole foods are usually more filling and have fewer calories, so you’re less likely to overeat them.

3. Try to Keep Your Normal Routine

It might feel weird packing a lunch when you’re not going anywhere, but keeping your normal routine as much as possible can make it easier to stay on track. If you are used to eating a healthy breakfast and lunch, try eating the same things. For me, I’ll usually have a tuna sandwich with carrots and hummus at lunchtime. So now that I’m working from home, I’m making the same thing, just so I have a set plan and am less likely to grab something unhealthy.

4. Don’t Eat Mindlessly

Eating while you’re working is an easy way to accidentally overeat. Every time you eat a meal or snack, step away from what you are working on and eat in a separate room. This will prevent you from overeating simply because you are paying more attention to your food. It can also help to portion out your food before you start eating, especially if you really can’t step away from your desk.

5. Find Alternative Ways to Relieve Stress

It’s so easy to turn to food when you’re feeling bored or stressed out. This being said, it’s essential to have an alternative plan for when you’re feeling this way. Things like yoga, reading a book, journaling, etc. are all great options. Pretty much anything that would help distract you that doesn’t involve turning to food for comfort.

No matter what you’re working on at home, remember that we’re all in this together. We’re all going through similar struggles, and it’s important to help each other along as we go. I hope these tips are helpful and that everyone is staying well!
